Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood are behind Radioheadβs music. The two are now back working together. Not at Radiohead, but on a side project called The Smile. Not only the two, but they also encourage Tom Skinner who is a drummer from Sons of Kemet. Having surprised the public by becoming a performer at Glastonbury 2021, this side project finally released its debut single titled βYou Will Never Work in Television Againβ.
Nigel Godrich returns to be a producer who has produced every Radiohead album since OK Computer in 1997 and most of Yorkeβs solo work. This song feels more like a post-punk that emerges from guitar, bass, and fast-tempo drum beats. Thom sings almost a bit like Pablo Honey days in terms of his phrasing and cadence.
βYou Will Never Work in Televisionβ is an introductory song from The Smile that condenses post-punk elements. Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood want to provide more organic and straightforward music through this single. The presence of Tom Skinner was also able to strengthen the nuances of this single through his drum beats, although he was the drummer for a jazz band.
The Smile will also play three different intimate live shows at Magazine London on January 29 and 30. According to the announcement, the band will perform βto a seated audience in the round,β with the performances broadcast in real time via livestream. Pre-sale tickets can be purchased on the www.thesmiletheband.com.
