Defiantly back at it, DeLorean has released a teaser for a vehicle that will really take it into the future. In the days leading up to the Super Bowl, DeLorean Motor Company revealed what appears to be its iconic car with a darkened profile, declaring that βThe Future was never promised.β
There are no other visual clues that the car will be an electric vehicle, other than the hashtags DeLorean chose to promote the tweet: #DeloreanEvolved #ElectricVehicle.
Despite their sleekness, the original cars were not all that exciting. The car was downright sluggish by todayβs standards, with an anemic 130 horsepower from its 2.85-liter V6 engine. It would be enormously better than the original carβs numbers if even a mild electric powertrain were added. The DeLoreanβs original rear-engine design could provide exciting opportunities for battery placement, should the EV version stay true to the initial configuration.
The automotive prototyping and design firm Italdesign tweeted an image that looks suspiciously similar to the teaser DeLorean released during the Super Bowl. Two companies are rumored to be collaborating on an EV, which makes sense given the Italian companyβs five decades of experience building prototypes and concept cars.
It would be DeLoreanβs second attempt to produce a vehicle in recent years if the new EV was successful. The company planned to launch a series of new cars in 2017, but regulatory hurdles delayed the launch. Although a price has not yet been assigned to the DeLorean EV, if it comes to pass, the DeLorean reproductions typically go for around $100,000. Itβs unlikely, however, thatβll have any bearing on the rumored new DeLorean EV price.
