A fashion makeover of Jamiroquai’s 1996 “Virtual Insanity” music video, Junya Watanabe launched its 2022 Fall/Winter MAN collections. Teaming up with Jay Kay, the frontman of this British jazz-funk, Watanabe reworked the slights of Jay Kay’s bold and flamboyant style into a series of menswear.
Altogether with The Secretariat of Culture of Mexico, Junya Watanabe created a framework which was mainly inspired by the Iroquoian family, the Native American tribe which was also taken by the band’s name. Resonating the authenticity of Native American rich culture, Junya Watanabe portrayed a perfect blueprint for its color palette and pattern as it has been Jay Kay signature styles.
The extravagant style started with the pairing of Mexican serapes and Navajo blanket which draw a vibrant tone and indigenous patchworks pattern. In this Fall / Winter collection, Junya Watanabe dug more about the wide range culture of the Iroquois tribe and fussed it with his classic aesthetics and style. Jamiroquai’s tropes were also mirrored in a big top-hat, and glare of bottom-skinny silhouette. The consistency of Jay’s signature oversized parkas and jacket were utilized to rework its originality with a touch of Japanese Watanabe’s pattern.
