The upcoming album by Angel Olsen, Big Time, will be released by Jagjaguwar on June 3. The American singer-songwriter and musician also shared the album’s lead single and accompanying music video.
The video was directed by Kimberly Stuckwisch, stars Olsen and her partner. In a release, Stuckwisch said, “Angel’s story is a gift”. “It allowed me to visually explore the universal themes of love, loss, and most importantly what holds us back from realizing our true selves.”
Big Time was originally written as a project about the expansive power of love at a time when Olsen was coming out as queer, experiencing her first queer love and heartbreak. Nonetheless, the project’s overtones are tinged with a profound sense of loss. Her parents passed away within a few weeks of each other while she was coming out and accepting herself. Just three weeks after her mother’s funeral, she was in the studio, recording what would become a profoundly introspective and tender new album.
The album begins on a bright note with “All the Good Times,” which pays homage to JJ Cale. “I can’t say that I’m sorry / when I don’t feel so wrong anymore,” she sings with a softer and more honest tone than ever before.
Jonathan Wilson, co-producer of Big Time, mixed it at Fivestar Studios in Topanga, Calif. Multi-instrumentalist Drew Erickson plays piano, organ, and handled string arrangements, and Olsen’s longtime bandmate, Emily Elhaj, handles bass throughout the project.
Later this summer, Olsen will embark on The Wild Hearts tour with Sharon Van Etten, Julien Baker, and Spencer. In addition, Olsen also announced a fall European tour on sale this Friday.
